Women's Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health is an area of medicine focused on the management of the health needs specific to women. Though men and women experience many of the same health issues, your health needs differ because of your reproductive organs and your unique health issues, such as menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.

Women also have different health risks than men, which requires specific health screenings, such as breast exams for breast cancer and Pap smears for cervical cancer. And with those health conditions that affect both sexes, women may exhibit different symptoms and benefit from different treatments.

The experienced providers at Family Medical Home specialize in women’s health and provide comprehensive care that addresses all your needs and concerns.

What can I expect during a women’s health exam?

You can expect a comprehensive exam from your provider at Family Medical Home during your women’s health exam. Your provider tailors the exam based on your age, gynecological history, risk factors, and other medical needs.

During your exam, your provider asks detailed questions about your current health needs or concerns, medical and gynecological history, family history, diet and exercise, and daily stresses. Your provider then conducts a physical exam that may include a breast and gynecological exam.

The full-service primary care practice also performs Pap smears, pregnancy tests, and testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), as well as any other lab work you may need. Many of the requested lab tests are performed through the in-house lab services for your convenience.

After your exam, your provider makes recommendations to support your health and wellness needs, which may include updating your immunizations. Your provider can also develop a diet and exercise program to fit your needs.
